Kolkata, 19/09/2026 : Calcutta football has once again been dominated by Mohun Bagan SG

Following a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Mohammedan Sporting at the Barasat Stadium on Saturday, the Mariners were crowned Calcutta Football League Premier Division champions. The victory put an end to the green-and-maroon camp’s eight-year drought; their last CFL championship came in 2018. Additionally, it was Mohun Bagan’s 31st Calcutta Football League championship.

All the elements of a traditional Kolkata football match were present at the event. Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting knew going into their last Championship Round match that the outcome would determine the championship.

Sahal Abdul Samad’s header in the 26th minute gave Mohun Bagan the ideal start. But before halftime, Mohammedan Sporting made a furious comeback and equalized the score with Lalremsanga Fanai.

After the intermission, the Black Panthers completely changed the course of the game. The Mariners were down to ten men when Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Deeprobhat Ghosh was sent off in the 59th minute. Mahitosh Roy scored a penalty in the 63rd minute to give Mohammedan Sporting a 2-1 lead, capitalizing on the numerical advantage.

However, Mohun Bagan was unwilling to give up.

In the 70th minute, Sahal scored his second goal of the game to tie the score for the Mariners once more. Sayan Banerjee finished the incredible comeback just four minutes later, scoring the game-winning goal to give Mohun Bagan a 3-2 lead.

Mohammedan Sporting advanced in an attempt to find another equalizer during the tight closing minutes. Nonetheless, Mohun Bagan’s ten men maintained their defensive posture and won the match in a way that would never be forgotten.
