Houston, June 17: Tournament favourites Portugal were held to a shock 1-1 draw by FIFA World Cup debutants DR Congo in a spirited Group K encounter that produced one of the biggest surprises of the opening round.

For DR Congo, the result felt like a victory, showcasing resilience, tactical discipline and belief against one of Europe’s strongest sides. Portugal, meanwhile, will need a much-improved performance in their remaining Group K fixtures if they are to fulfil their championship ambitions.
