Los Angeles, June 17: England began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in style with an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in a thrilling Group L contest, laying down an early marker in their quest for a second world title.

The Three Lions made a confident start, controlling possession and forcing Croatia onto the back foot. Their dominance was rewarded in the 24th minute when captain Harry Kane calmly slotted home after a perfectly weighted through ball, giving England a deserved lead.

Croatia responded with character and found an equaliser just before the half-hour mark. Andrej Kramarić capitalised on a defensive mistake to beat goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, ensuring the sides went into the interval level at 1-1.

England emerged from the break with renewed intensity. Winger Bukayo Saka restored the lead in the 55th minute with a brilliant solo run before firing beyond the Croatian goalkeeper. Just 12 minutes later, midfield star Jude Bellingham extended England’s advantage with a spectacular curling strike from outside the penalty area.

Croatia refused to surrender and reduced the deficit through Luka Sučić, who produced a composed finish to make it 3-2 and set up a tense finale. However, England weathered the pressure before substitute Ollie Watkins sealed the victory deep into stoppage time, finishing off a swift counter-attack to make it 4-2.

England manager Gareth Southgate praised his side’s attacking display but admitted there was room for improvement defensively after conceding twice. The victory moves England to the top of Group L and gives them valuable momentum ahead of their next fixture against Ghana.

Croatia, meanwhile, face a crucial encounter against Panama knowing they must bounce back quickly to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

England’s blend of experience, youthful flair and clinical finishing sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament, with the Three Lions looking every bit like genuine contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026 crown.
